Garlic Rocker: Crush Several Cloves in One Roll
A regular garlic press fits one or two cloves at a time, and getting the garlic out of the hinge afterward is the worst part. A garlic rocker works differently. There's no hinge and no chamber. You just set it over the cloves and roll it back and forth.
It's a curved piece of stainless steel with a honeycomb of small holes, topped with a black grip that fills your palm. Press down and rock, and the cloves get pushed up through the holes into the curve, and you scrape them straight into the pan. Four or five cloves crushed at once, and cleanup is a quick rinse.
Garlic rocker or garlic press?
A classic press is great for one clove. A garlic press rocker wins when a recipe calls for a lot of garlic, like a big pot of pasta sauce, a marinade or garlic bread for a crowd. It also has no moving parts, so there's nothing to break and nowhere for garlic to hide.
How to use it
- Peel the cloves and set them on a cutting board.
- Place the rocker over them, curved side down.
- Press firmly and rock it from side to side a few times.
- Lift it up and scrape the crushed garlic out of the curve with a knife or spoon.
Use a wooden or plastic board. A glass board is too slippery, and the steel can scratch stone.
Good for
Garlic, of course, plus small pieces of fresh ginger. It's handy for garlic butter, aioli, chimichurri, stir-fry sauces and anything that starts with "add garlic."
Care
Rinse it under running water right away, from the outside in, so the garlic pushes back out through the holes. It's dishwasher safe if you'd rather not bother.
Shipping: delivery to the US takes about 4 to 10 days. To the rest of the world, up to 32 days.
