Digital Measuring Spoon That Weighs as You Scoop

Measuring spoons are only as accurate as how level you scoop them, and a kitchen scale is overkill for a pinch of yeast or 18 grams of coffee. A digital measuring spoon, also sold as an electronic measuring spoon, solves both. It's a spoon with a little scale built into the handle, so it weighs the ingredient while you scoop.

It weighs from 0.1 g up to 500 g and shows the reading on an LCD screen. You can switch between grams, ounces, grains and carats, zero it out with the tare button and freeze the number with the hold button so you can still read it after you tip the spoon. Exact amounts down to 0.1 g, with nothing extra to wash.

Where it really helps

  • Coffee: the same dose of beans or grounds every morning.
  • Baking: yeast, baking soda and salt, where a couple of grams make a difference.
  • Tea: consistent amounts of loose-leaf tea.
  • Supplements: protein powder and other powders.
  • Pet food: small, measured portions.

For big amounts of flour or sugar, a regular kitchen scale is still easier. This is for the small stuff.

How many grams in a teaspoon?

It depends on what you're measuring, which is exactly why a spoon scale is handy. A level teaspoon of water weighs about 5 g, granulated sugar about 4 g, table salt about 6 g and all-purpose flour only about 2.5 to 3 g. Scoop the same teaspoon twice and you'll often get two different weights. Weighing takes the guesswork out.

How to use it

  1. Press TARE / ON-OFF to turn it on, and hold the spoon level.
  2. Press MODE to choose your unit.
  3. Press TARE to zero the display.
  4. Scoop slowly until you hit the amount you need, then press HOLD to lock the reading.

Details

It's about 235 mm (9.25 in) long with a scoop about 68 mm (2.7 in) wide, and there's a hole at the end for hanging. It runs on 2 AAA batteries, which aren't included.

Caring for it

The handle holds the electronics, so don't put it under running water or in the dishwasher. Wipe the scoop with a damp cloth and dry it. Take the batteries out if you won't use it for a while. It weighs, it doesn't convert to teaspoons, so for volume conversions try our cups to mL converter.

Add it to your cart, and toss a pack of AAA batteries in too. More tools in our kitchen measuring tools and baking tools collections.
