Stainless Steel Julienne Peeler with Two Blades
Cutting a carrot into thin matchsticks with a knife takes forever, and the strips never come out the same size. Getting out a mandoline for one carrot feels like overkill. This julienne peeler is the in-between: a few quick pulls and you have a pile of even strips.
It's all stainless steel with two edges. One side is a straight blade for regular peeling, and the other has a row of small teeth that cut thin strips as you pull. So you peel the carrot, flip the tool and julienne it, all with the same thing in your hand. Two tools in one, and it rinses clean in seconds. There's a hole in the handle for hanging it up.
What people make with it
Zucchini noodles are the big one. It's also great for carrot slaw, spring roll and banh mi fillings, Thai papaya salad, cucumber for sushi bowls, daikon pickles and shoestring potatoes for hash browns. If you're cutting one to three vegetables, it's faster than setting up anything else.
How to get nice even strips
- Peel the vegetable first with the straight side.
- Trim one end flat and rest it on a cutting board. Hold the other end.
- Turn to the toothed side and pull it along the whole length in one smooth stroke.
- Give the vegetable a quarter turn every few strokes.
- Stop before your fingers get close, and cut the last bit with a knife.
Firm vegetables work best. For zucchini, stop at the seedy middle. For potatoes, rinse the strips to wash off extra starch before cooking.
Is it better than a mandoline?
For big batches, a mandoline is faster. For everyday cooking, a julienne vegetable peeler wins: no setup, almost no cleanup, and it fits in a drawer.
Care
Rinse both blades right after using it, before vegetable bits dry between the teeth. Use a small brush rather than your fingers, dry it and hang it up or store it where the blades won't knock against other tools.
