Pineapple Corer and Slicer in Stainless Steel
Cutting a whole pineapple with a knife takes a while. You saw off the spiky skin, lose a lot of fruit with it, dig out the brown eyes and then cut around the tough core. A pineapple corer does all of that in about a minute.
It's a stainless steel pineapple corer: a metal tube with a round, serrated blade at the bottom and a yellow plastic handle that clips on top. You twist it straight down into the pineapple, and it cuts the fruit into one long spiral while leaving the core and the shell behind. Neat pineapple rings in a minute, and the shell doubles as a serving bowl.
How to use a pineapple corer
- Cut the top off the pineapple.
- Center the corer over the core and press down.
- Turn the handle clockwise, pressing gently, until you feel the bottom of the fruit.
- Take the handle off and pull the tube up. The fruit comes out in a spiral.
- Slice the spiral into rings, or cut it straight down for half rings.
Stop just before the base so the shell stays whole. Then fill it with juice, a smoothie or a fruit salad for a party.
Is a pineapple slicer better than a knife?
You keep more of the fruit, since the blade follows close to the skin. The rings come out evenly sized, which looks nice on a fruit platter or on the grill. And there's no hard core to cut around.
A couple of tips
Ripe pineapples with a sweet smell at the base are the easiest to core. Very small or unusually large pineapples won't line up as neatly with the blade, so expect thinner or uneven rings.
Care
Take the handle off and rinse both parts. Clean the serrated edge with a brush, never your fingers.
